On 17th August 2004 this dream became a reality when the opportunity arose for Linda and her husband Robert to share a piece of land with their neighbours.
This would provide the ideal place to keep hens.
After many phone calls Linda persuaded a battery farmer to sell them some hens that were destined for processing. On seeing the conditions the hens were kept in they decided to take 5, as this was the number squeezed into each cage. But the upsetting sights that Linda and Robert saw that day – sheds with row upon row of cages with little brown heads poking out – made them determined to rescue as many hens as possible.
And so 'FREE AT LAST!' was hatched!
In the time 'FREE AT LAST!' has been running, Linda and Robert have used several different suppliers and have been overwhelmed by the level of interest from people wanting to provide a home for rescued hens.
Linda and Robert ask just £2.00 for each hen which covers the cost of buying them from the supplier. Any extra donations are appreciated however, and go directly to benefit our rescue hens.
The latest rescue took place on tues 19th November 2013 when we took the borrowed poultry crates and collected 9 hens! Amini rescue but very worthwhile.
This makes the total so far 8,221 girls which really is a dream come true!
